Lumens in LED - Solar Lights

Why LED for solar lights?

Solar lights extensively use LED as their light source as it uses less watts to produce the same amount of brightness as an incandescent bulb. LEDs last longer with zero ultraviolet emission and once installed, there is no replacement required. Instead of burning out, the lumen depreciation happens over time by gradually getting dimmer. When it reaches around 70% of its original brightness, the LED is considered to have reached its end of usable life.

What is a lumen?

Lumen is a measurement of visible light to the human eye or the intensity of brightness emitted by a light per unit of time. LEDs provide a higher CRI (color rendering index) as opposed to fluorescent, incandescent or halogen lumens, so there is a better clarity with LED lumens when compared to the equivalent number of other types of lights. In simple words, the brightness of a solar lamp depends on the lumen rating, not the watts.

What is Watts?

Watt is a unit of measurement of how much electricity the LED consumes to reach its promised brightness. Lumen per watt ratio depends on the type of light source used, whether it is LED, halogen, fluorescent or incandescent bulbs. A 30-watt LED can produce the same lumens as a 250-watt incandescent bulb and therefore, instead of choosing your light based on wattage, it is better to specify the lumen you require for your lighting.

Calculation of Lumens per Watt for Solar LED lights?

Lumens per watt is calculated through a simple formula.

Lumens = Watts*Lumens per Watt

For instance, the lumens of a 20 Watt Solar Street Light where 1 Watt has 160 lumens for a Solar LED Light is 20*160 = 3200 lm.

Lumens required for solar lights

Using a cutting-edge technology like LED, conventional street lights can be replaced with solar-powered street lights with minimal maintenance and operation cost. Depending on street lighting application, the lumens may vary. All in one solar street lights used to illuminate residential areas have lumens starting from 1100 lumens. Solar street light used for streets, highways, building perimeters, etc. have lumens ranging from 2400 to 18,000.

Solar garden light have different brightness depending on the application. Smaller solar garden lights used for accent lighting use LEDs of around 50 to 300 lumens and larger solar garden lights used as security lights use LEDs that have lumens of 600 to 1,800 lumens. Solar flood lights require focused illumination so higher lumens are required which can be between 700 to 1400 lumens.

Wattage is never sufficient in order to predict the brightness of your solar light and LEDs are securing a dominant place in the solar market. The most commonly used LED colors in solar light applications are warm white and cool white. Solar LED lights are the perfect environment-friendly and energy-efficient outdoor lighting option. Solar lights of all types are improving consistently in durability, efficiency and brightness. Measuring your light intensity by lumens will help you determine which solar LED lights are the best for your exterior lighting needs.
